United Days of Caring 2016

Courtesy of United Way website. This weekend United Way of Southeast Missouri begins its 2016 annual community funding drive. Everyone is invited to participate in United Days of Caring with hands-on community projects and services.

Volunteers and supporters are invited to the new Family Pavilion in Capaha Park on September 9 to start on community improvement projects. After a complimentary breakfast with United Way everyone will be given their project location and will be sent off for a weekend of community support.

All ages and skill levels can participate in this year’s event. A variety of projects are available that will help organizations like schools, churches, food pantries, Habitat for Humanity, the Women’s Safe House, and more. These organizations need help with maintenance, construction, stocking, playground clean-up, and other chores.

Another unique project United Way is helping to create is the installation of Little Free Libraries throughout the community. These popular book-sharing vessels invite the community to take or give books for free. The Cape Girardeau Police Department is one business that has agreed to set up a Little Free Library.

Elizabeth Shelton, the Executive Director of United Way of Southeast Missouri says, “United Days of Caring  . . . invites anyone and everyone to get involved in giving back. Our worldwide slogan is ‘Give, Advocate, Volunteer,’ and this weekend allows everyone to do just that.”

For those wishing to participate in United Days of Caring, including organizations in need of help, visit to provide project details and register as a volunteer. Meet on Friday, September 9, from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau.
